On 24 October 2024, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on China's misinterpretation of United Nations (UN) Resolution 2758 and its military provocations around Taiwan. The text condemns Beijing's actions and reaffirms the EU's support for Taiwan.
UN Resolution 2758 (1971) recognised the People's Republic of China (PRC) as the sole legitimate government of all China. Beijing interprets it as excluding Taiwan from any participation in international organisations. The European Parliament considers this interpretation erroneous and that Taiwan has the right to participate in international forums. Moreover, China has multiplied military exercises and incursions in the area around Taiwan, which the EU regards as provocations.
The adopted resolution:
The resolution was adopted by 432 votes in favour, 60 against and 71 abstentions. This shows broad support among MEPs for a critical stance towards China and solidarity with Taiwan.
This resolution has no direct legal effect, but it sends a strong political signal. It can influence future EU decisions, for example on trade or diplomacy. For citizens, this means that the EU supports stability in the region and opposes any unilateral action that threatens peace. In practice, this could translate into strengthened exchanges with Taiwan (cultural, economic) and increased vigilance regarding Chinese activities.
