The European Parliament has approved a financial contribution for 513 dismissed workers from the Belgian company Match-Smatch. This measure aims to support professional reintegration in the context of the economic crisis in the retail sector. The support is provided through the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund.
The decision is based on the EGF Regulation (European Globalisation Adjustment Fund) which provides support to workers affected by major changes in global trade. The main objective is to facilitate reintegration into the labour market for workers dismissed due to economic restructurings.
Belgium submitted the application in June 2024 and the European Commission completed the assessment in September 2024. Implementation will be coordinated by Belgian authorities in the Wallonia region, where over 70% of dismissals occurred. Monitoring will be carried out according to EGF procedures.
Dismissed workers will benefit from requalification and vocational training services. The measure will particularly support older individuals facing difficulties in finding new employment. Social partners and public employment services play a crucial role in programme implementation.
