The European Parliament has adopted a resolution addressing Russia's use of a "ghost fleet" to circumvent oil sanctions. These tankers daily transport Russian oil through European waters, enabling Moscow to continue funding the war in Ukraine. The measures aim to protect the marine environment and strengthen sanctions effectiveness.
Russia employs approximately 600 aging tankers operating without adequate insurance and frequently changing flags. These practices allow oil sales above the price cap established by the G7+. The objective is to stop these illegal activities that undermine sanctions and pose serious environmental risks.
The resolution calls on the European Commission and member states to implement urgent measures. EMSA will receive additional intervention vessels. Ghost fleet monitoring intensifies immediately with regular reporting to Parliament.
European citizens will gain better protection against marine pollution risks. Coastal countries will avoid enormous cleanup costs after oil spills. Tourism and fishing sectors will be protected. All involved parties in maritime transport must comply with new transparency rules.
