The European Parliament has approved an agreement on judicial cooperation in criminal matters between Eurojust and the authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This decision comes in the context of strengthening partnership with Western Balkan countries and aims to increase the effectiveness of the fight against cross-border crime. The agreement will affect judicial and law enforcement authorities on both sides, as well as citizens who will benefit from more efficient justice.
The agreement fits within the policy of expanding EU judicial cooperation with partner countries. The main objectives include improving information exchange, coordinating investigations, and supporting cross-border criminal proceedings. Eurojust (the EU Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation) will be able to collaborate directly with its counterparts in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The agreement enters into force after completion of ratification procedures by both parties. The EU Council is responsible for the formal conclusion of the agreement, while implementation will be monitored by the European Commission. National authorities in member states and in Bosnia and Herzegovina will apply the provisions of the agreement in practice.
Citizens will benefit from more effective judicial cooperation in combating organized crime, terrorism and other serious crimes. Law enforcement authorities will have better tools for cross-border investigations. Businesses may benefit from a safer business environment. It is important that all parties respect data protection standards within the framework of this cooperation.
