The European Parliament has adopted a resolution to establish a special committee to address the housing crisis in the European Union. This initiative responds to rising prices and shortage of affordable housing affecting citizens across all member states. The measure particularly focuses on young people and vulnerable individuals facing difficulties in accessing decent housing.
Based on the Treaty on European Union, the Charter of Fundamental Rights and the European Pillar of Social Rights, the resolution recognizes the right to housing as a fundamental right. The main objective is to address the housing crisis affecting the health, wellbeing and living conditions of European citizens, with focus on disadvantaged persons and persons with disabilities.
The special committee will operate for 12 months, starting from the date of its constitutive meeting. At the end of the mandate, the committee will present a final report with concrete recommendations. Implementation of measures will be coordinated at national and European levels, in accordance with the competences of each level.
This initiative will benefit citizens facing difficulties in accessing housing, particularly young people, low-income individuals and vulnerable persons. Expected outcomes include improved access to decent and affordable housing, promotion of social inclusion and protection of fundamental rights. National and local authorities will play a crucial role in implementing the recommended measures.
