The European Parliament has adopted a resolution on the situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where the M23 rebel group, supported by Rwanda, has captured the regional capital Goma. The text responds to the recent escalation of violence that has caused a major humanitarian crisis, with hundreds of thousands of displaced people and numerous civilian casualties.
The resolution is based on statements from the EU, G7, UN and African Union. Objectives include condemning the escalation of violence, calling for an immediate ceasefire and supporting regional diplomatic efforts for stabilization.
The EU Foreign Affairs Council will discuss the situation on February 24, 2025. The African Union will address the crisis at the February 14 meeting. The EU is prepared to increase humanitarian aid and support regional peace initiatives.
The conflict directly affects over 500,000 recently displaced people, with women and children exposed to major risks. The humanitarian crisis worsens through blocked access to aid. Illegal mineral exports fund conflicts and undermine regional economy.
