The European Parliament has approved the mobilisation of the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund to support 2,411 workers dismissed from Belgian bus manufacturer Van Hool. This decision responds to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine on the automotive sector.
The European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) is a financial instrument providing support to workers affected by major changes in world trade patterns. The objective is to facilitate rapid reintegration into the labour market through active employment measures and personalised services.
Personalised services began on 22 April 2024 with an eligibility period of 24 months. Administrative expenses are eligible from 14 March 2024 for 31 months. Flemish employment services (VDAB) manage implementation at national level.
The 2,397 beneficiaries, one-third of whom are over 50 years old and 80% have secondary education or less, will receive support for retraining. The measure will mitigate the impact of industrial decline in the Lierre region and increase chances of professional reintegration in a greener and more digital economy.
