The European Parliament has approved the mobilisation of the EU Solidarity Fund to support Germany and Italy following the devastating 2024 floods. This decision responds to extensive damage caused by torrential rains and exceptional flooding that affected southern Germany and the autonomous region of Aosta Valley in Italy. The measure aims at rebuilding infrastructure and supporting affected communities.
The EU Solidarity Fund (EUSF) was created in 2002 to provide rapid financial assistance to member states affected by major natural disasters. The current objective is to provide emergency aid for reconstruction following the June 2024 floods, which caused damage estimated at over €4.1 billion in Germany and €158 million in Italy.
The decision was adopted in December 2024 and will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union. Funds will be available immediately after publication, with payment of advances to speed up intervention. The European Commission will monitor the use of funds in cooperation with national authorities.
Citizens in affected areas will benefit from support for rebuilding homes and infrastructure. Local authorities will receive resources to restore public services. Agricultural and small businesses will be supported in resuming activities. The measure demonstrates concrete European solidarity in times of crisis.
