The European Parliament adopts a position on the future of higher education in the European Union. This text comes in a context of growing global competition and the need to strengthen EU strategic autonomy. All European citizens who benefit from education systems are involved in this evolution.
Building on the Charter of Fundamental Rights and the Erasmus+ programme, the text aims to enhance transnational university cooperation. Main objectives include reducing fragmentation in higher education, promoting mobility, and strengthening the competitiveness of European universities at global level.
Implementation will proceed gradually until 2027, in line with the current EU financial framework. The European Commission will coordinate the process, while member states adapt national legislations. Monitoring will be carried out through regular reports on progress towards the European Education Area.
Students will benefit from expanded mobility opportunities and more flexible study programmes. Universities will be able to collaborate more easily across borders, and the European economy will gain a more qualified workforce. Special attention will be paid to social inclusion and equal access to education.
