The European Parliament has adopted measures to protect democratic processes against foreign interference and disinformation. These actions respond to increasingly frequent threats to European democracy. All EU citizens are affected by these risks to democratic security.
The text builds on recommendations from the INGE 1 and INGE 2 special committees that investigated foreign interference. The main objective is to create a coherent framework for detecting and preventing interference in democratic processes, including disinformation and hybrid attacks.
The special committee begins activities immediately after the constitutive meeting and will operate for 12 months. National authorities and EU institutions will collaborate in implementing measures. Monitoring will be conducted through regular reports.
Citizens will benefit from a democracy more resilient to external manipulation. Civil society organizations will have more tools to combat disinformation. It is important to develop media literacy and critical thinking among the population.
